In my early 20′s I was living every university holiday in Northern California’s Santa Cruz (from 1997-1999) visiting David. I wanted to enroll in a PhD course titled The History of Consciousness at UC Santa Cruz. The beautiful university grounds were perched graciously on the hills of Santa Cruz, with exceptionally beautiful views over Monterey Bay. Here is an extract to describe the course:

Although history of consciousness does not have formal tracks, it does emphasize a variety of topics and approaches in its seminars and research pursuits. Reflecting a serious concern for social, historical, and cultural theories, these areas of research can be most succinctly identified as studies at the intersection of race, sexuality, and gender; global capitalism and cultural process; psychoanalytic and semiotic theories of the image; science and technology studies; theories and histories of religion; and social movements.

I like old-horror films. I like Dracula music. That is balanced out with a love of bush poetry, bush walking, country houses, farm animals, ribbons, all things pretty. It goes without saying, whiskers on kittens. Kittens and cats in general, in fact. Especially big cats. I love big, gigantically fluffy and heavy cats, like The Ragdoll. It must be said no cat comes close to being the best cat, quite like your own. I won’t say too much except that my cat is of course unbeatably cute, intelligent and has no annoying traits. He has this uncanny knack of making anyone who visits our house become like a six year old girl. They want to take him home. They shrink to their knees as though they are partaking in a divinity. I think if he were a human, Bern would be down with entering into a committed relationship with Taylor Swift after the little heart-breaker has a run-away-love-affair-fling with Claudia Schiffer, cruising across America in their sexy 1970s Corvette.

One of the greatest art experiences I’ve had was in March 2010 at MOMA when Marina Abramović performed The Artist is present. It is an experience that I need to write about in length, and to examine (like I have with other artists on my blog). The exhibition upstairs was a retrospective on her life, and incorporated a live performance art curated piece with two naked artists standing closely facing each other, whose bodies you, the viewer, needed to squeeze past, in order to get into the next room. You could also choose not to do it – but even the choice or the decision and the process of that going through your mind – was (to my mind) part of the performance. The audience was part of the performance in The Artist is present and they were also part of it as they squeezed through a gap between two naked people. My favourite work of Abramovic’s is The Lovers, The Great Wall Walk, in which she and her husband walked the Great Wall of China over 90 days to meet in the middle and say goodbye forever.

Edgar Degas’s Dancers in the Rehearsal Room with a Double Bass (ca. 1882–85 oil on canvas). Havemeyer Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

In this image, Degas has used strongly contrasted the white tutu against the dark brown wood panel of the wall. This glimpse, through Degas’s eyes, of a ballet rehersal – a world that is usually only available to view in its final perfected state, with a ticket, is intriguing and real.
